An artist’s body of work is often referred to as a singular effort regardless of its degree of cohesion, but in Mr. Brethouwer’s case, the collection of art objects he has created over 30 years can only be considered as a single artistic act in the truest sense. The "Brethouwer Project" consists of making iterations of two forms, and only two forms: a conical sculptural object and a square wall-mounted panel. These are his elements through which he interacts with different modes of cultural production. It is almost as if the entire history of art is sampled, extracted, and reused.
