Brethouwer's preoccupation with the Chinoiserie style goes back to the very beginning of his work with the cone and the panel. This longest-standing style in Western art is of mixed origin, a 'mengstijl' in Dutch, interculturation, but also as a gateway to a diversity of materials, crafts, decorative motifs and symbolic meaning, all to be played with.
