An artist’s body of work is often referred to as a singular effort regardless of its degree of cohesion, but in Mr. Brethouwer’s case, the collection of art objects he has created over 30 years can only be considered as a single artistic act in the truest sense. The "Brethouwer Project" consists of making iterations of two forms, and only two forms: a conical sculptural object and a square wall-mounted panel. These are his elements through which he interacts with different modes of cultural production. It is almost as if the entire history of art is treated as a found object, a readymade, sampled, extracted, and reused.
